Ford’s 81-yard finish was built on Stanford’s shorter work

The ACC’s weekly running-back honor followed four touchdowns. Three arrived before the breakaway that supplied the loudest highlight.

Three touchdowns came before the long one

Micah Ford’s fourth touchdown against Elon traveled 81 yards on his first touch of the fourth quarter. His first three scoring runs covered one, seven and five yards. Stanford’s 34–7 victory on October 17 had already been built before the carry that made the best highlight.

The first two touchdowns completed nine-play possessions of 64 and 80 yards. The third followed a 33-yard punt return. Ford supplied both the short finish when the offense had done its advancing and the long finish that did the advancing itself.

Four scores, more than one kind of responsibility

Ford rushed for 179 yards and added 52 receiving yards, giving him 231 from scrimmage. Stanford announced his second ACC running back of the week honor of the season on October 19. Four rushing touchdowns tied the school’s single-game record.

The receiving contribution matters alongside the record. A back who remains useful when the call is a pass does not have to disappear from the offense whenever the defense crowds the run. That flexibility can help the same personnel group produce different problems. It does not mean every catch was designed to deceive Elon; it means Stanford received another form of production from its central offensive contributor.

Keep the finishing work in view

The Cardinal improved to 3–4. Ford now has eight rushing touchdowns this season, tied with Duke’s Nate Sheppard atop the ACC. NC State visits on Friday, October 23.

The next opponent will have seen the 81-yard run. Stanford should not let its own review become just as narrow. The sustained early possessions required repeated execution before Ford reached the goal line, and the punt return changed the field before his third score. Preserving those contributions gives the offense more than the hope of another enormous opening.

A short scoring run can look ordinary precisely because the preceding work has made the finish manageable. Ford’s day showed why those carries deserve a place beside the breakaway. Stanford received a record-tying performance without relying on four copies of the same play. The useful continuation is that variety, not a demand that every fourth-quarter handoff travel eighty yards.
