Nine tackles tell only the end of the play
Anthony Britton made nine tackles at Syracuse on October 10, one short of his career high. The fourth-year defensive tackle has 23 for the season, tied for fourth on Virginia’s team. At 6-foot-3 and 308 pounds, he brings an obvious physical presence to the middle. His development has required more than adding force.
Virginia’s October 16 profile describes a player who earned the defense’s most-improved honor in 2024, worked as a reserve in 2025 and became a starter this season. Tony Elliott’s game-week discussion emphasized understanding the scheme, reading blocks and recognizing backfield alignments. Those are the decisions that give strength a useful destination.
The block supplies information
An interior defender cannot treat every offensive lineman’s first step as the same invitation to attack. A block’s direction can reveal where space is being created and which gap the defense needs protected. Winning a collision while abandoning that responsibility can move the defender away from the actual problem.
Britton’s progress should therefore be evaluated through how his initial read supports the next player’s job. If he occupies the correct space, a linebacker may reach the ball with a clearer path. If he chases an attractive opening without accounting for the concept, the rest of the front has to repair it. The tackle total records his involvement. It does not record every occasion on which a correct assignment helped someone else finish the play.
Dallas demands more than a strong first step
Virginia, 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the ACC, visits No. 24 SMU, 4–1 and 2–1, on October 17 at noon Eastern on The CW. The Cavaliers are seeking their first road win. SMU has won all nine of its ACC home games since joining the conference in 2024.
Against an offense led by Kevin Jennings, Virginia needs the front’s recognition to remain disciplined even when the passing threat demands attention. Britton cannot solve every part of that offense from defensive tackle. He can make his own area less forgiving. His next improvement is turning a fast, informed first read into a dependable place for the rest of the defense to build around.
