Wake Forest’s bye protected momentum; Virginia will test whether it sharpened it

The No. 14 Demon Deacons rested after a 41-7 road win and now face a defense that nearly shut out Duke’s offense.

The evidence

Wake Forest spent Saturday off and rose to No. 14 in the AP poll after a 41-7 win at California had secured bowl eligibility. The Demon Deacons are 6-1 and 4-1 in the ACC. Virginia visits October 31 after holding Duke without a touchdown for nearly 55 minutes, making the post-bye challenge more demanding than the Cavaliers’ record suggests.

The California win displayed balance: Wake controlled the game without forcing quarterback Gio Lopez to solve every possession. That distribution should remain central against Virginia. A defense that fits the run aggressively can be moved with play action and route combinations that occupy the linebacker before the throw enters the space behind him.

What the film is asking

The bye should sharpen timing rather than produce an overloaded call sheet. Wake Forest needs its best early-down run, a quick completion that defeats pressure and one vertical complement. Those pieces can be repeated from several formations, forcing Virginia to diagnose the same concept without receiving the same visual clue.

Defensively, the Deacons should make Virginia prove it can finish a drive. The Cavaliers scored 16 in the loss to Duke and will want to protect the ball, shorten the game and avoid exposing their defense to Wake’s pace. Tackling the checkdown and controlling quarterback movement can turn that patience into third downs instead of easy possession time.

What comes next

A high ranking changes how an opponent approaches the game. Virginia can treat Winston-Salem as an opportunity to reset its season, while Wake is expected to confirm what the poll already says. The Demon Deacons should resist urgency created by the number and allow their possession-by-possession advantages to accumulate.

Momentum survives a bye only when the details return intact. Wake Forest’s useful identity is not the 34-point margin at Cal; it is the ability to win early down, keep Lopez in rhythm and make the defense finish long drives. If those elements appear against Virginia, No. 14 will look like the result of a portable method rather than a temporary reward.
