One return changes two positions
Phillip Daniels is expected to return at right tackle for Ohio State against Indiana. That supplies more than a replacement name at one spot. Gabe VanSickle, who moved outside for the Maryland game, can return to right guard. A familiar tackle-guard arrangement gives the Buckeyes a different starting point for their toughest conference road assignment yet.
The October 16 availability update reported by Eleven Warriors still lists Austin Siereveld and running back Ja’Kobi Jackson as out. Receivers Brandon Inniss and Devin McCuin, linebacker Christian Alliegro and nickelback Jay Timmons are also off the injury report. Reinforcements are coming. The Buckeyes are not simply restoring every opening-day option.
The running game has a different distribution
Bo Jackson rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the 45–16 win over Maryland. With Ja’Kobi Jackson unavailable, he enters Bloomington with a larger share of the backfield responsibility likely available. That is an opportunity to build on a productive game, not evidence that another identical workload or result is guaranteed.
The line’s arrangement matters to that opportunity. A tackle and guard need to respond together when a defender changes his position or the front changes its count. Returning to familiar jobs can reduce the adjustment, but it cannot make Indiana’s next movement predictable. Ohio State should judge its reshuffle by whether the back reaches a usable lane and Julian Sayin retains a clear decision, not merely by whether the pregame depth chart looks more reassuring.
A stronger group still has to arrive together
No. 4 Ohio State, 5–1, faces No. 5 Indiana, 6–0, at noon Eastern on October 17 on FOX. The game offers no quiet interval in which the returning players can assume their timing will restore itself.
Watch the first changed defensive front and the first passing situation that requires a coordinated response on the right side. Those moments will show whether the personnel news has become operational improvement. Daniels’ expected return makes the plan less improvised. The Buckeyes still have to turn five separate blocks into one protection, and a changed backfield into a running game Indiana cannot dismiss.
