The result and the decisive throws
Ohio State beat Indiana 19–15 in Bloomington on October 17, turning two fourth downs into touchdowns. Indiana’s official box score records both scoring passes from Julian Sayin: a two-yard completion to Bo Jackson before halftime and a 38-yard strike to Jeremiah Smith in the fourth quarter.
The play-by-play places Jackson’s score on fourth-and-two with seven seconds left in the second quarter, giving Ohio State a 10–7 halftime lead. Smith scored on fourth-and-one with 12:46 remaining, extending the advantage to 19–7. Indiana answered with Josh Hoover’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Nick Marsh and a two-point conversion, but the score stayed 19–15.
What Ohio State reported about its quarterbacks
Ohio State’s official postgame account says Sayin left with an injury and Luke Fahey finished at quarterback. It credits Sayin with 235 passing yards and two touchdowns on 15 completions in 29 attempts. That account does not establish a diagnosis or a return timetable. This recap makes no conclusion about his availability for the next game.
Analysis: fourth down changed the value of two possessions
The useful distinction is between extending a drive and finishing it. At the goal line, the Jackson completion converted a possession already deep in scoring territory into a touchdown. From the Indiana 38, the Smith completion did more than gain the yard needed to keep the offense on the field: it ended the possession in the end zone. The same down produced two very different kinds of payoff.
Those outcomes should not be mistaken for a universal instruction to throw on fourth down. A successful result cannot, by itself, tell us whether another formation, opponent or field position would reward the same decision. What this game supplies is a concrete explanation of where Ohio State found its touchdown production.
The quarterback change also limits what can responsibly be projected from this result. Winning the game and knowing the next starting lineup are separate questions. The postgame record settles the first; a subsequent availability announcement must address the second. Our dated pregame preview remains available below as the account of what was known before kickoff.
