One more snap was available
CJ Carr’s final pass toward Jaden Greathouse fell incomplete in the end zone at BYU. The game was declared over, a 28–24 Notre Dame loss. The Big 12 subsequently acknowledged that one second remained when the ball hit the ground and that the replay crew had incorrectly cleared the play.
That admission changes how the ending should be described. Notre Dame did not simply consume every available second of its final possession. It was denied another snap the conference says should have occurred. The Irish trailed by four, so the missing opportunity was a chance to attempt a winning touchdown, not a routine kick to settle the score.
The clock finding is narrower than the argument
The conference said it would review its end-of-game officiating process before the following week’s games. Reporting by The Athletic, published by The Salt Lake Tribune, places the final incompletion on first down from the BYU eight. The acknowledged error therefore concerned a specific remaining opportunity, not a vague complaint that the losing team deserved more time.
Debate about possible pass interference on that play is a separate matter. The statement establishes the clock error; it does not establish that an uncalled penalty would have produced a different final score. Combining every disputed element into one certainty would make the explanation less accurate precisely when accuracy matters most.
Accountability without an invented touchdown
Notre Dame remains 6–1 after the defeat. The pass that could have followed was never attempted, and its result cannot be reconstructed from the talent on either roster. BYU might have defended it successfully. The Irish might have scored. Neither possibility turns into a fact because the clock administration was wrong.
The meaningful demand is a process that preserves the play the rules allow before the teams leave the field. Coaches can prepare a call and players can execute their assignments only if that opportunity still exists. This ending deserves review because the conference says it removed one—not because anyone can responsibly award the touchdown that Notre Dame never got to attempt.
