From one assignment to the next

Notre Dame beat Stanford 58–7 on October 10 and improved to 6–0. The official Irish recap records scoring plays of 97, 70, 40, 31 and 30 yards while Stanford finished with 202 total yards. Those are clear indicators of a game in which the Irish repeatedly changed the field in large increments.

Notre Dame’s next game is at BYU on October 17, with a 7:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff on ABC. BYU’s announcement confirms that College GameDay will be in Provo and that the matchup features two unbeaten teams. The setting changes; the need to create usable offensive situations does not.

What travels with an explosive offense

Notre Dame’s biggest plays should be treated as a threat BYU must respect, rather than a promise of another runaway score. A defense that protects against the long play may make intermediate possessions more important. The Irish need to be able to take that space without behaving as though every series has failed when it does not produce a touchdown immediately.

The question is whether the offense can stay patient while retaining its ability to strike. Those qualities can reinforce one another. Productive ordinary plays force a defense to respond, which can reopen the larger opportunity. Repeatedly forcing the larger opportunity can do the opposite and make the offense easier to defend.

A tougher standard than the final score

We would evaluate the Provo performance through how Notre Dame handles resistance: a drive beginning deep in its own territory, a stalled early possession or a stretch when the opponent keeps the ball. Those situations reveal whether an offense can keep its intended structure when the game stops offering a straightforward path.

The defense has its own role in keeping that structure available. Preventing easy points gives the offense time to work through an adjustment instead of chasing the game. The Stanford result demonstrates how forcefully Notre Dame can punish opportunities. BYU presents a more useful question for the next phase of the season: can the Irish keep manufacturing opportunities when the crowd, opponent and possession game make them less immediately available? That is the distinction between displaying explosive talent and taking control of a difficult road game.
