Too few chances to build a sequence
Alabama’s first eight possessions against Tennessee produced 72 yards on 24 plays and only two first downs. The 26–10 loss on October 17 was not simply a collection of drives that ended badly. For much of the afternoon, the Tide could barely get a drive started.
The final totals were 201 offensive yards, 54 rushing yards and two third-down conversions in thirteen attempts. Four giveaways added a separate cost. Alabama fell to 5–2 overall and 3–2 in the SEC, carrying an offensive problem that cannot be explained away by one turnover or one missed block.
Completion percentage was not forward progress
Keelon Russell completed nineteen of twenty-nine passes for 147 yards with two interceptions. He also supplied Alabama’s touchdown on a nineteen-yard run. Those completions did not add up to a passing game that consistently moved the offense out of its starting predicament.
A short throw is useful when it arrives with room to run or makes the next down manageable. It becomes much less useful when the defense can rally before the receiver gains meaningful distance. The team totals do not identify every coverage or protection error, but they do establish the practical consequence: Alabama repeatedly needed another conversion without having built enough momentum to make it routine.
Recovering the ball is only half the exchange
The Tide did make two fourth-and-one stops. On another Tennessee fourth-and-one, a false start changed the situation. Those defensive moments kept offering the offense an opening. They were not a substitute for creating a sustained possession once the ball changed hands.
Alabama did not produce a drive longer than 35 yards until the final four minutes. That is the clearest place to begin the correction before Texas A&M visits on October 24: first find a reliable way to connect one successful play to another. A spectacular isolated run can change a score; a sequence of attainable second and third downs changes how an offense operates. The Tide need enough dependable progress that every possession does not require rescue. Saturday supplied too little of it, too often.
