Jackson’s late throw made Arkansas’ defensive reprieve stick

The Razorbacks ended a fourteen-game SEC losing streak by using a takeaway to close the game, not merely to postpone another Vanderbilt chance.

The takeaway still needed an offensive answer

Arkansas intercepted Vanderbilt with 3:46 remaining on October 17. The Razorbacks were ahead, but obtaining the ball was not the same as removing Vanderbilt’s next chance to take it back. KJ Jackson’s 31-yard completion to Jamari Hawkins helped turn that reprieve into the field goal that settled a 31–21 win.

The victory ended Arkansas’ fourteen-game SEC losing streak and moved the Razorbacks to 3–4 overall and 1–3 in conference play. The historical relief was substantial. The closing sequence matters because it explains how the team converted relief into a result that could no longer slip away.

Jackson supplied more than the final throw

Jackson completed 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards and rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown. Arkansas gained 438 total yards, including 187 rushing, and scored three times on the ground. The quarterback was part of both ways of moving the offense.

Two rushing touchdowns by Settles, from eleven and three yards, included the score with nine seconds left in the third quarter that broke a 21–21 tie. Those runs established the advantage. The later completion to Hawkins helped preserve it by changing the distance Arkansas still needed to travel for additional points.

Protecting a lead can require attacking a window

The final field goal came from 39 yards with 24 seconds remaining. Vanderbilt had gained 390 yards, enough offensive production that another full possession would not have been a trivial concern. Arkansas’ best late defensive resource became the time and field position its offense consumed.

There is no universal requirement to throw after every late takeaway. The relevant question is whether a usable opportunity can move the possession toward a finish without surrendering its value. Jackson and Hawkins supplied that opportunity here. Arkansas should retain the connection between the units: the defense obtained the ball, and the offense did enough with it that the defense did not have to keep proving the same point. Ending the streak required both parts of that exchange.
