The most important work came in consecutive snaps
LJ McCray made four tackles, including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss, as Florida beat Texas 27–24. Late in the third quarter, he produced a tackle for loss and shared a sack on consecutive plays. Florida then drove to a 20–17 lead, turning defensive disruption into the possession that changed the score.
The performance earned McCray SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week and Comeback Player of the Week recognition. The awards reflect a larger return after he appeared only once in 2025 before a season-ending injury. His 2026 total now stands at 12 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss.
Disruption can be measured by what comes next
A sack is recorded on the defender’s line, but its value belongs to the team sequence. McCray’s late-third-quarter work forced Texas away from a stable down and gave Florida’s offense another chance with the game close. That is the repeatable lesson: change the opponent’s options, leave the field and let the next unit use the advantage.
McCray does not need to chase another multi-sack afternoon against every opponent. A compressed pocket can force an early checkdown; firm edge play can send a run toward help. Those outcomes may not produce weekly honors, yet they can create the third down or punt that keeps Florida from needing another late rescue.
The bye should make a breakthrough ordinary
Florida is 5–2 and ranked No. 20 entering an open week before the October 31 game against Georgia in Atlanta. The pause gives McCray and the front time to study why the Texas sequence worked without assuming the same call will defeat a different protection. Technique must travel farther than surprise.
A comeback award naturally emphasizes distance from last season. Florida’s more useful focus is the next down. McCray has shown he can win important snaps against a ranked opponent. If his leverage, hand placement and pursuit make similar disruption part of the defensive baseline, the Gators can create more possessions before the fourth quarter demands one.
