Georgia rebuilt the game, then lost its next possession

A 94-yard tying drive gave the Bulldogs another chance to win. The final turnover handed that chance to Auburn instead.

The comeback had already done the difficult work

Georgia drove 94 yards in thirteen plays to tie Auburn with 2:58 remaining on October 17. When the Bulldogs got the ball again at their own 39 with 1:12 left, the game they had rebuilt was available to win.

Instead, Gunner Stockton’s fumble gave Auburn possession at its own 44 with 58 seconds remaining. A 34-yard field goal as time expired completed the Tigers’ 27–24 victory. Georgia’s final opportunity did not fail because it lacked enough field to work with. It failed before the Bulldogs could turn that opportunity into their own finish.

Production and protection belonged in the same calculation

Stockton completed 22 of 34 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. Georgia had led 14–0 before allowing 24 unanswered points, then returned to even through the long drive ending in a four-yard touchdown pass to Humphreys.

Ten Bulldogs caught passes, and Craig Dandridge Jr. led the group with four receptions for 88 yards. Georgia gained 440 total yards to Auburn’s 366. Those figures establish that the offense could create progress. They also make the final possession more painful: another forced attempt at extra progress was not the only way the Bulldogs could keep a winning outcome available.

One more play was still worth preserving

A late tied game changes the value of the ball. A short gain that leaves the next snap available can be more useful than a longer attempt that risks removing the possession entirely. That is an analytical principle, not a claim that every possible choice on Stockton’s last play was visible from the box score.

At 6–1 overall and 4–1 in the SEC, Georgia can retain the evidence of its comeback without excusing the ending. The 94-yard march showed the Bulldogs could respond after the afternoon had turned against them. The fumble showed why completing that response still requires protecting the next opportunity. Auburn did not need to reconstruct the whole game after the turnover. It needed one short finishing possession, and Georgia had given it one.
