The leading receiver came from the backfield
Dilin Jones led LSU in rushing and receiving against Kentucky. His sixteen carries produced 56 yards; his seven catches added 84. LSU lost 35–34 in overtime on October 10, but the two lines identify a useful part of the offense’s response when the ball needed somewhere else to go.
Sam Leavitt completed 25 of 34 passes for 275 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Tigers’ first three scoring possessions took fourteen, eleven, and fourteen plays. LSU could assemble long series. The result showed that their length alone did not guarantee control, particularly when Kentucky found other ways to change the score.
The outlet still needs a destination
A running back in the passing game can offer more than an emergency throw. Releasing at the correct time can put him beyond a rusher, give the quarterback a clear landmark, and force a defender to tackle in space. Jones’s seven receptions show that this connection was a meaningful part of LSU’s offense, not an occasional item at the bottom of the box score.
The challenge is making the outlet produce a useful next situation. A completion caught in a crowded space may count the same as one with room to advance, but it does not leave the offense with the same choices. LSU should value the timing and location of the throw alongside its completion. The back’s protection responsibility also has to be satisfied before the release can become a dependable answer.
Make a long drive earn its length
LSU is 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the SEC before hosting Mississippi State on October 17 at 11 a.m. Central on ESPN. The Tigers need to turn their ability to maintain a possession into a stronger return at its end.
Jones can help without being asked to solve every part of the offense himself. A well-timed backfield completion can avoid a negative play, extend a drive, or make a downfield defender reconsider how quickly he leaves his assignment. Those gains become more valuable when the surrounding offense finishes in scoring territory. LSU’s Kentucky performance supplied evidence of an available connection. Saturday asks whether the Tigers can use it to make their possessions less laborious, and make the labor they retain worth more on the scoreboard.
