LSU needs an answer before the final two yards

The Kentucky loss should be reviewed through the earlier possessions that left the Tigers exposed to one final play.

A one-point defeat and a home return

LSU lost 35–34 in overtime at Kentucky on October 10. The Tigers’ official recap records Kenny Minchey’s successful quarterback keeper on the deciding two-point conversion. LSU hosts Mississippi State next Saturday, with an 11 a.m. Central kickoff listed by the school.

The result is narrow, but the analysis should not be limited to the final snap. LSU’s account also describes an opening fourteen-play possession that covered 69 yards and ended in a field goal. Long work between the twenties can still leave the game dependent on a small margin at the end.

Do not let the ending hide the possessions

A conversion that decides a game gives fans an obvious image to remember. Earlier series are less dramatic, but they shape how much influence that final image can have. An offense that repeatedly does most of a drive well still has to turn the last part into enough points.

Our assessment is that LSU should evaluate the whole chain: how often it reached a scoring chance, what happened when the field compressed and whether the defense supplied opportunities to get the ball back. That review can recognize Kentucky’s successful play without assuming LSU’s only correction is a different response to one quarterback keeper.

Give the next game a clearer margin

Against Mississippi State, the relevant question is how much control LSU can establish before late-game decisions become urgent. We would watch the finish of the first few substantial possessions, defensive answers immediately after an opponent’s first down and whether a penalty or turnover changes the plan for several series rather than just one.

The Tigers do not have to manufacture a blowout to show that they responded. They need a more reliable connection between productive plays and scoreboard value. A close win built on complete possessions would provide different evidence from another afternoon in which the outcome comes down to one rescue opportunity. Kentucky’s finish was effective because LSU was still within reach. The next step is to reduce how much of the entire performance can be decided by the last small piece of field.
