The fresh evidence
LSU’s 31-0 win over Mississippi State was its first SEC shutout since 2007. TJ Dottery made 12 tackles, Davhon Keys added 10 and a half-sack, and the linebackers controlled a conventional assignment. Auburn now presents a different one: quarterback Byrum Brown leads his team with 459 rushing yards and five scores on 107 carries.
Brown has also thrown for 1,205 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. That combination creates temptation. LSU can chase the takeaway in the passing game, but an undisciplined rush gives Auburn’s most frequent runner the escape lane he wants. Dottery and Keys must treat the quarterback as part of the run count without abandoning the coverage behind them.
The matchup inside the matchup
The safest structure is a coordinated cage. The edge rushers compress rather than fly past Brown, the interior prevents a direct step-up and one linebacker holds the green-grass lane until the ball is committed. A pressure that does not produce a sack can still win if it forces Brown to throw from a fixed spot.
Keys’ and Dottery’s tackle totals should translate into controlled gains, not repeated chases. Auburn will use motion and read concepts to make one defender wrong. LSU can answer by fitting from the inside out, trusting the boundary and refusing to let a fake pull multiple defenders away from the actual runner.
What decides it
The road context matters. LSU is 5-0 at home and 0-2 away, while eight of the last 10 meetings at Auburn have been one-score games. In Jordan-Hare Stadium, one quarterback scramble can amplify the crowd and change a conservative third-down call into an aggressive fourth-down attempt. Preventing the first escape is a form of game management.
The shutout established what LSU can do when every defender sees the same play. Auburn’s quarterback will work to blur that picture. If the linebackers keep their eyes disciplined, tackle without overrunning the ball and make Brown win from the pocket, LSU can carry its best defensive performance into the environment where it has not yet won.
