One afternoon changed the freshman’s sample
Jake Kreul entered the Kentucky game with three tackles and half a tackle for loss. He left with career highs of six tackles, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, earning SEC Freshman of the Week. The sack total set an Oklahoma record for a true freshman, according to the school’s October 19 release.
That production arrived in a 21–13 loss, which keeps the evaluation honest. Oklahoma held Kentucky to 230 total yards and 72 rushing, yet the Sooners could not turn every defensive win into points. Kreul’s breakout adds a pressure option. It does not erase the need for the whole team to convert field position into a favorable score.
Pressure depends on the down before it
A pass rusher is most dangerous when the offense cannot disguise its intention. Oklahoma can help Kreul by controlling first down against Mississippi State, closing run lanes and limiting easy completions. Third-and-long lets his length and burst become the central problem. Third-and-short allows the Bulldogs to move the launch point or avoid a dropback entirely.
That context also prevents sack numbers from becoming the only measure. A rush that forces an early throw can still create a punt, while an undisciplined path can open a scramble lane. Kreul’s Kentucky performance proves he can finish when he reaches the quarterback. The next task is repeating his assignment while offenses account for him sooner.
Depth can outlast the first plan
The Sooners visit Mississippi State at 3:30 p.m. Eastern with a 3–3 record. A freshman emerging in October gives the defensive front another way to rotate without surrendering pressure. That can matter late, especially if the offense extends drives and lets the front rest between series instead of returning immediately after another empty possession.
Kreul does not need another record to confirm his role. He needs useful snaps that fit the situation: set the edge when the Bulldogs run, compress the pocket when they pass and finish without giving away an escape lane. Oklahoma discovered a new tool in defeat. Using it within a complete down-to-down plan is the more valuable follow-up.
