Three phases and one final kick

Oklahoma beat then-No. 1 Texas 27–24 on October 10. The Sooners’ official recap credits Tate Sandell with the winning 47-yard field goal as time expired and records touchdowns in all three phases. The final score moved Oklahoma to 3–2 overall and 1–1 in SEC play.

There is no need to diminish an upset because it included unconventional scoring. Defensive and special-teams touchdowns count because those units are part of the team. The more demanding question is what Oklahoma can reproduce when another game does not supply those same scoring opportunities.

Separate a result from a formula

Our assessment is that a winning result and a sustainable offensive formula are different kinds of evidence. The result proves Oklahoma could finish this particular game. It does not guarantee that another opponent will surrender the same field position or that a takeaway will become a touchdown.

Fans can look for the repeatable pieces by watching whether ordinary possessions create manageable downs and whether the offense can score after receiving the ball without an immediate advantage. That is not a criticism of the Red River finish. It is a way of identifying how the Sooners can make the next win less dependent on extraordinary events.

Confidence should sharpen the standard

An upset can change a locker room’s expectations, but the best version of confidence is specific. Players and coaches should know which assignments held up under pressure and which still need work. Believing another victory is possible is useful; assuming the same dramatic route will appear again is much less useful.

The next performance should be evaluated for sustained offensive movement, sound kicking execution and defensive possessions that do not need a scoring return to become valuable. A defense that forces an ordinary punt has still done its job. An offense that completes a long drive has supplied a different kind of proof from a short-field score. Oklahoma’s opportunity now is to combine those more regular contributions with the competitive finish it displayed in Dallas. Red River can be a turning point if the Sooners make the habits that supported it travel beyond the rivalry.
