The fresh evidence
Oklahoma has scored on 11 of 13 red-zone possessions, a rate that looks healthy until the result is separated: six touchdowns and five field goals. The Sooners enter their first meeting with Mississippi State at 3-3 after outgaining Kentucky 346-230 in a 21-13 loss. Yardage reached the scoring area; the offense did not finish often enough.
John Mateer has completed 114 of 175 passes for 1,308 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. Seven of those scoring throws traveled at least 20 yards. That explains both the explosive capability and the red-zone strain. When the field contracts and the deep space disappears, Oklahoma needs a dependable answer that does not require Mateer to hold the ball for a heroic window.
The matchup inside the matchup
Isaiah Sategna III leads the Sooners with 33 catches for 414 yards and two touchdowns. Moving him before the snap can create leverage without demanding a contested fade. A quick return route, a shallow crossing concept or a designed touch can force Mississippi State to defend horizontally and open the inside run behind the reaction.
The Sooners should also use the quarterback’s legs selectively. A read keeper near the goal line changes the gap count, but Mateer’s interception total warns against extending a broken play until coverage collapses. The better rule is decisive: take the designed crease, throw the immediate answer or preserve the down.
What decides it
Jeff Lebby’s presence on the opposite sideline adds familiarity. Mississippi State’s coach was Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023, so disguise and tendency-breaking will matter. The Sooners cannot assume a favorite concept will surprise a staff that understands the family of ideas behind it.
Oklahoma does not need to abandon the explosive throws that produced seven touchdowns. It needs a complementary offense for the final 20 yards. Turning one of those five field-goal possessions into a touchdown changes the Kentucky result’s shape and would make Starkville far less forgiving for the home team. The red-zone rate is acceptable; the red-zone finish is the actual assignment.
