Protection makes the choice credible
Patrick Kutas earned SEC co-Offensive Lineman of the Week after Ole Miss ran for a season-high 257 yards in a 31–3 win over Missouri. The right guard has started all six games this season and 21 for the Rebels. More broadly, the line has allowed 0.83 sacks per game, best in the SEC and tenth nationally.
That sack rate matters to the run game because it prevents passing downs from becoming automatic retreats. When Trinidad Chambliss can remain in the pocket and the backs are producing, a defense cannot sell out for either answer. Kutas’ work helps Ole Miss reach the snap with several credible outcomes instead of one emergency response.
Austin will challenge the clean sequence
No. 7 Ole Miss visits Texas on Saturday night. The Longhorns have lost consecutive games by three points and will treat every early stop as a chance to reset their season. Crowd noise and movement across the defensive front can turn one missed communication into the sack that changes the entire series.
Kutas’ experience is useful before contact. Protection begins with identifying the front and agreeing on the assignment, particularly when a late shift tries to create two blockers for one defender and none for another. Ole Miss can keep its dual 100-yard rushing threat from the Missouri game relevant only if the line also handles obvious passing situations.
Low sack exposure is a means, not a trophy
The Rebels do not need to preserve their 0.83 average as an end in itself. A quarterback can avoid a sack and still throw too early, while a line can allow pressure yet recover enough for a productive play. The useful standard is whether Chambliss reaches his reads without the defense dictating the ball’s departure.
Kutas’ weekly honor highlights a position whose success is usually visible through everyone else. In Austin, that invisibility can become Ole Miss’ advantage. If the line keeps the down usable, the backs can continue to punish lighter boxes and the pass game can answer a crowded one. Protection is what lets the offense choose instead of react.
