The workload had a second destination
Kewan Lacy ran sixteen times for 122 yards. Makhi Frazier carried fifteen times for 101. Ole Miss beat Missouri 31–3 on October 17 with its first pair of hundred-yard rushers in the same game since facing Arkansas in 2022.
The Rebels gained 257 rushing yards while allowing 39. That imbalance did more than decorate the final statistics: Ole Miss could keep asking Missouri to defend the run without placing every meaningful carry in one runner’s hands. The performance brought the Rebels to 5–1 overall and 3–1 in the SEC.
A second back keeps the whole offense involved
Trinidad Chambliss completed twenty of thirty-six passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and added a five-yard rushing score. Caleb Cunningham caught three for 61 yards and a touchdown. The ground production did not require removing the quarterback and receivers from the central argument.
A shared backfield workload matters most when the defense cannot use the substitution as a reliable announcement. Both backs producing substantial gains means the offense can change its runner without conceding the premise of the possession. It does not prove every play looked identical or every defender reacted the same way. It does show Missouri never found enough successful answers to force the Rebels into a narrower attack.
The margin had two foundations
Ole Miss finished with 498 total yards and extended its home winning streak to fifteen games. Its first victory over Missouri since 1974 came with a defense that made the visitors’ rushing game almost disappear from the final balance.
Those two sides reinforced each other. An offense able to keep its ground game productive can continue using its full menu; a defense preventing comparable progress makes the opponent’s next possession more dependent on a passing answer. Neither condition guarantees the next week’s outcome. Together they explain why this game became so one-sided. With Texas next on October 24, the Rebels have a concrete model worth retaining: distribute the carries without diluting their value, and make the other sideline work much harder to keep its own choices open.
