The Gamecocks own two meaningful run numbers
South Carolina enters the Tennessee game averaging 232.3 rushing yards, best in the SEC, while allowing 103.7 on 3.2 yards per carry, third in the league. That combination explains how a 3–3 team can still carry a clear identity into Saturday. The Gamecocks want to set the physical terms on both sides of the line.
Running backs Rahsul Faison and Jawarn Howell have been productive, while quarterback LaNorris Sellers has 411 rushing yards alongside 1,338 passing yards and a 12-to-4 touchdown-to-interception line. Sellers’ mobility expands the offense, but it should not become permission to assign him every collision simply because he can survive one.
Tennessee makes discipline more important than enthusiasm
The Volunteers arrive 6–1 after DeSean Bishop carried 32 times for 159 yards against Alabama. South Carolina’s open date provided preparation time, not a shortcut. Defenders must fit the run with consistent leverage and still account for the quarterback and perimeter action. One eager step inside can turn a sound front into an open edge.
The same logic applies when South Carolina has the ball. Tennessee will know the Gamecocks’ rushing profile and can load defenders toward the obvious point of attack. Using motion, play action and the backs as real alternatives can keep Sellers from becoming the defense’s only target. A varied ground game is safer precisely because it distributes contact.
Possession is the bridge between the two strengths
South Carolina has gained at least 390 yards in all six games, a mark the school notes only 12 FBS teams have matched. Yardage becomes useful against Tennessee when it produces time for the defense to rest and field position the coverage units can defend. A long drive can support the run defense before the next snap.
The Gamecocks do not need to prove they are tougher than Tennessee on every play. They need their rushing offense and run defense to cooperate across the afternoon. Let the backs share the offensive burden, keep Sellers available for high-value situations and make Bishop find the correct crease repeatedly. Discipline, more than spectacle, can make both rankings matter.
