Texas must replace Simmons’ snaps without inventing his replacement

The edge defender’s lower-leg injury adds an unresolved personnel problem after Florida’s 27–24 comeback. It does not explain away the entire loss.

The immediate news has limits

Colin Simmons was carted off with 13:47 remaining in the fourth quarter against Florida and did not return. Steve Sarkisian described a lower-leg injury, with its extent not yet established in the postgame reporting. That is the available information, not a diagnosis or a timetable.

Texas lost 27–24 on October 17 after leading 17–3. Florida’s comeback was already underway before Simmons left, so the injury cannot responsibly become an explanation for the whole collapse. It creates a new question about the next defensive rotation while leaving the earlier football problems intact.

The missing work is more than a sack total

Simmons contributed four tackles for loss and a sack. His 31.5 career sacks rank third in school history. Justin Cryer made a career-high eleven tackles, while Jelani McDonald added nine and a tackle for loss. Texas had meaningful defensive contributions without enough successful possession endings.

Florida ran 81 plays and held the ball for 38:11, gaining 313 yards. The Longhorns gained 272 themselves. That imbalance placed a repeated workload on the defense, which now must prepare for the possibility of distributing Simmons’ snaps differently without assuming one player can reproduce his disruption.

Assignment first, comparison later

The practical starting point is the job at the edge: preserve the correct space, coordinate with the interior rush and finish contact with help available. A replacement chasing an isolated spectacular play can make neighboring responsibilities harder even if the effort looks urgent. The statistics do not tell us which specific adjustment Texas will choose.

At 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the SEC, with Ole Miss next on October 24, Texas needs both a clearer medical update and a functional plan that does not wait for one. Those are related tasks, not interchangeable ones. Simmons’ status will shape the personnel. The defense still has to make that personnel operate together, while the offense supplies enough sustained possession to avoid repeating Saturday’s workload.
